What is the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act?

Washington state recently adopted the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act (SHB 1261, Chapter 81, Laws 2009 (S)). The Act, which is modeled on the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act, establishes the following:



Standards for determining which state has primary jurisdiction over guardianship and protective proceedings.


Procedures for communication and cooperation between courts in different states.


Methods for transferring jurisdiction to another state.


Recognition and enforcement of out-of-state orders.


The Act will be effective on January 1, 2010. If you have further questions on whether the Act will apply to your case, you should consult an attorney.
